- don't overload yourself with free work, pick and choose where you give your time so you can still make money
- look at your own life, your church, your pets, your community for small free projects you can use to build a portfolio
- be willing to take contract or part time work since it can turn into a full time job within a few months
- show up prepared to interviews, research the company and ask real questions since employers are being more selective now
